Sloppy Joes

There’s more to Sloppy Joes than a can of Manwich! Grab the last of the ingredients on your way home from class, and have a fun roommate dinner tonight.

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 4 ribs celery, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 6 cloves crushed garlic
  • 2 lbs (.9 kilograms) ground beef
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tsp Tabasco sauce
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns
  • Napkins

Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add onion, celery, jalapeño, and bell pepper; cook, stirring, until soft. Add the garlic, and continue cooking and stirring another 3-4 minutes.

Increase heat to medium-high and add the ground beef, breaking it up with your spoon or spatula or whatever you’re using to stir with, stirring occasionally. Cook until brown, about 10-12 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

While meat is browning, combine tomato sauce, tomato paste, ketchup, Tabasco, and Worcestershire sauce. Turn the heat back down to medium and add the tomato mixture. Cook, stirring, until it starts thickening–about 15-30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, pile onto hamburger buns, and with a pile of napkins at the ready, dive in.

Tip: for “healthier” sloppy joes, drain the grease out of the meat before adding the tomato mixture.
